Mozart’s Requiem – March 9th

Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D minor is one of his best known and most enigmatic pieces.  He began the work as a commission for Count Franz von Walsegg of Vienna in 1791, however Mozart passed away in December of that year, before completing the piece.  The following year, another composer, Franz Xaver Süssmayr, completed the Requiem using the sections that Mozart had already written, along with whatever notes could be found.  Of course, completing another composer’s unfinished orchestral work requires a great deal of intrepretation, and so right from 1792 there has been ongoing debate and speculation about how Mozart would have finished the piece.  In recent years there has even been a flurry of other composers that have written their own versions of the Requiem, which they believe are more faithful to Mozart’s original intentions.

We’ll never know for sure how Mozart would have finished his Requiem, but we do know that it is an exciting and challenging piece.  We are working hard on our collaboration with Indepence Sinfonia and are delighted to be bringing this iconic piece to life.  We hope that you will join us.

Also on the program: Mozart’s Overture to the Impresario and Mozart’s Piano Concerto Number 24, featuring Stephen Li as the piano soloist.
